The Barking or Thick-tailed Gecko can be found in a range of
habitats across southern mainland Australia. Growing to about 15 cm long, it is one of the largest
ground-dwelling geckos. When alarmed, it raises itself off the ground, lunging forward and making
a sharp squeaking sound. When hunting, it stalks its prey in slow motion, before jumping and
securing the victim in its strong jaws. This gecko is commonly found in groups of two or three
under granite or silicrete slabs or in abandoned rabbit warrens in sandy areas.
